Keeping Frontosas In Your Home Aquarium

Before a person goes out and buys this species for their home aquarium it is important for them to be sure that a frontosa is right for them. You can expect the frontosa to live anywhere from 10-12 years if you take care of them properly. So, as you can see owning a frontosa is a very long commitment. You must also consider that a large tank will need to be purchased to house the frontosas once they grow into audolthood. The frontosa can grow as large as 14 inches in length. This is no small fish and it will require alot of room.

The water quality is also an important factor to consider. Frontosas require a very high ph (9.5 or higher) so, you will have to use salts to keep this ph high. Frequent water changes are also important to ensure the frontosas health and longetivity.

Feeding your frontosas is another area which should be taken seriously. Frontosas have huge appetites. They will eat constantly throughout the day if you let them. These fish will accept most food types and a mixed diet of commercial pellet food and fresh foods such as beef heart or small snails with weak shells should be provided. Also take into account that spurlina should be included in their diets. In my opinion spurlina is the most important thing that you can feed your frontosas. From consuming spurlina frontosas will get the vegetable nutrients that are so vital to them.

The last area to consider under the home aquarium category is proper filtration. You should have a very powerful filter in your aquarium to keep the water as clean as possible between the times that you are not actually cleaning the tank yourself. A good filter will not be cheap but you will be thankful you have it in the future.

Possible Types Of Filtration To Consider
    1. Wet/Dry filter
    2. Canister filter
    3. Fluidized bed filter
    4. Under gravel filter
    5. Powerhead filter
